Students Learn Relevance of Their Classroom Studies

submitted by Rebecca Manners, Senior, Pelham High School

The Business/Education Collaborative of the Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce sponsored a trip to Stratham for the Marketing students of Pelham and Salem High Schools to learn about the Timberland Company, makers of the famous “yellow boot.”  Prior to the trip, Cheryl LaScola, senior project manager at Timberland who helped coordinate the visit, provided the classes with a survey to determine which departments had the greatest interest for the students.  Rotating through the public relations, product development, and marketing departments, students met with key managers to learn about their jobs and the Timberland business model.  The students also previewed one of Timberland’s new commercials about the Earthkeeper boot collection.  “I was surprised at how much work goes into promoting the Timberland brand,” said Mike Sapochetti, a Salem High School senior.  The Earthkeeper boots are Timberland’s newest product, which were designed in keeping with the company’s commitment to going “green.”  The boots are made from recycled materials.  On display was a huge plastic boot constructed from recycled water bottles and other recyclable materials in order to promote the new Earthkeeper boots.  The students were amazed by this structure.  Timberland, which is located at 200 Domain Drive in Stratham, was selected by the BIZ/ED Collaborative, as it is one of the outstanding models in New Hampshire and globally for its commitment to corporate social and environmental responsibility.  Wendy Dorval, Pelham’s Marketing teacher said, “The Timberland tour was a real learning experience for my marketing students as they were able to see firsthand how products are tested and promoted and that ties in very well with what they’re learning in class.  Everyone at Timberland was very friendly and accommodating, which made this field trip extremely successful.”  Jennifer Spence, a faculty member of Salem high school agreed.  She added, “The Timberland field trip was a wonderful educational trip.  The sessions were very informative and provided students with an insight into the world of marketing.”

‘Festival of Trees’ Benefits Families in Need

by Andrea Dannewitz

Delahunty’s Florist and Nurseries of Windham hosted a charitable ‘Festival of Trees’ fundraiser event from November 23 through December 20 to benefit less fortunate families in the Salem, Pelham and Windham area.  Jay Yennaco, owner of Delahunty’s, said that they wanted to do something to help the less fortunate in the community. The annual ‘Festival of Trees’ held in Methuen, MA that benefits less fortunate families in their city inspired him.

“This was intended to create Christmas support for families in need.  The money donated to the selected families can be used for anything; Christmas gifts, food, or utility bills,” said Jay Yennaco.  The funds raised (which this being their first year was several hundred dollars) was raised through the sales of raffle tickets purchased by those looking for a chance to win a fully decorated Christmas tree, which were donated for the fundraising event.

Yennaco said the event was in partnership with Windham’s Helping Hands, a local non-profit charity, helping fill the needs of families that are struggling in the areas of Pelham, Windham and Salem.  He would like to see other local businesses and service organizations participate in next year’s ‘Festival of Trees’, as this will be an annual event that is in its infancy.  “People loved the idea.  We are off to a good start as a lot of people have already committed to participating next year.  We will continue to grow this event every year, and despite the ice storm, we still had a good turnout.  I would love to see even more community participation in coming years,” said Jay Yennaco.
